You guys, I've got something I've got to get off my chest.

I HATE house parties.

You know those "parties" where you get together and someone is shilling the latest and greatest overpriced kitchen gadget/bag/jewlery/....personal massager..../candle/beauty product while the hostess looks on with eager dollar sign eyes?

I HATE them. The pressure to buy is just too great for me.

I think it's because I suffer from TNS, or Too Nice Syndrome. I can't say no - I get an invite, and while I want to scream (or at least polietely state) that I can't/don't want to go, I don't.

And then I go. And I listed to the host droan on and on about this product will make my life all puppies and rainbows and OMG if I love it and spend $50 I'll get a free ice cube tray and OMG if I just spend $35 more I might as well sell the stuff myself because you get so much stuff free!

And I buy stuff. And I regret it.

Now, if it's not bad enough having to buy this stuff from a friend of a friend of a friend, now I've got a coworker selling some stuff - and somehow she convinced our boss to allow her to have one of these parties at work. The stuff she's selling isn't cheap, either (most items are in thte $75-$100 range).

Ugh. So how do I say no?

Does looking at the picture of this shirt make anyone else dizzy? I always feel a little woozy when I look at pictures of narrow stripes - I blame it on inner-ear problems as a child. I also get motion sick watching my boyfriend play Arkahm City (a video game). I'm just so sensitive. :)

I'm the worst and can't remember who made this necklace - I bought it online from a small-ish designer (not from Etsy) and I can't remember who. Sorry, Charlies.

Speaking of Charlies (Charlies -> Charley Horse -> Muscles -> Working Out), I ran my first 5k Halloween weekend! I did in at a world record breaking speed at 36 minutes (on the dot). Feel free to send me your 2011 Guinness Book of World Records for an autograph - I'll be right between to the guy with the largest feet ever and the lady who can fit 56 marshmallows in her mouth.

So after that display of athletic prowess I got a thorn in my side (or something) to be better, so I obviously signed up for a half marathon. So, come April 15, 2012, I will be running 13.1 miles through scenic (and surprisingly hilly) St. Louis. My friend Linsey (yeah, that's how her name is spelled) has run the halfy (people call them that, right?) twice before (although not last year, when they shut the course down due to high temperatures), so we'll be running it together....or, rather, she'll be running it as I jog behind her going "can we puh-leeeeeeeeeezzzzz stop?!?!" for approximately 10 miles.

Since the race in in April (I'm calling it a race because I'm planning on coming in 1st place in my age division (which just means I need to run it in a hour and some change, so that should be no problem)), we are doing all of our training in scary, cold, icy St. Louis winters. I've got a couple pairs of running tights and a refill of my inhaler prescription, so I should be good. Thankfully Linsey just got a fancy-pants job doing fancy-pants sciencey stuff less than a mile from my work, so we can run together after that.

So, yup, I've become another one of those "runners". Ugh. I hope my toenails don't fall off.

Happy Friday, everybody! I don't have an outfit post for you (my camera cord has gone missing and I've been too lazy to search for it), but I am going to do this week's FBFF post because it's about my favorite thing: books!

As you may know, I recently got a library card for the first time in my life - I managed to grow up in the only county in Missouri without libraries, so I never had one to use (except my piddly little public school library). When I moved to St. Louis proper back in May, however, I gained access to all the St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and St. Charles County Libraries. It. Is. Amazing.

Due to my library access (I can read all the books I want - FOR FREE!) I've read a LOT of books lately - I go through about two a week. If you want to see most of what I've read in the past couple months, along with what I plan to read, check out my Goodreads page (and if you read a lot, sign up for a Goodreads account - you add books to your bookshelves (read or to read), and rate them. Then, once you rate 20 books, it gives you recommendations - so helpful!).

I tend to gravitate more towards dark stories - suspenseful books about rape, murder, and other crimes are my favorite, especially when they are non-fiction. With the list below I tried to cover a range of topics, though...I know not everyone likes books about rape.

So, anyway, here are my top five favorite recent reads (I linked :

The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes - This is a "don't judge the book by the cover" book, because the cover art makes it look it's going to be some soft, fluffy, romance novel. In actuality, this book is SO. GOOD. Without giving too much away, it's about a girl who is forced to abandon her previous life and live life as someone new. It's very suspenseful and page turner. This book covers CeeCee's life from her late teen years until she is in her 40s or 50s, and is a big book, but SUCH a quick read.

Before I Go To Sleep - I just finished this book yesterday, and I wish it were longer. It's about a woman with "50 First Dates" syndrome - she wakes up every morning forgetting everything prior. The majority of the book is this woman's diary that she keeps to help her remember stuff, but the ending comes out of nowhere and is so shocking.

Something Borrowed - I hate myself for recommending this, because I like being a bit of a book snob. However, if you haven't read this piece of chic lit, you need to. I was super prepared to hate it (it's chic lit about a girl who has an affair with her best friend's husband), but I loved it. And I'm ashamed.

Room - This is a fictional story about a little boy and his mom who live in a room, held captive by a creepy dude who kidnapped and rapes the mom. It is told from the point of view of the boy and is so good. I was worried it would be annoying, but it's really endearing (and sad, obviously). A must-read!

Lucky - This is a non-fiction piece written about the author's rape. If you are easily scared (like me), don't read this alone. I read it when my boyfriend was out of town and I was PARANOID that someone was going to break in and attack me. Still, it's a good story.

I have dry, sensitive skin with occasional break-outs (basically all the most awesome thinks all together). This philosophy cleanser is gentle and AMAZING. I don't know a single person who has tried this cleanser and not loved it.

philosophy shower gels are the one bad habit I just can't quit. The scents are all amazing, and my sense of self-worth is bumped up a notch every time I use these over priced soaps (and I'm only half-joking). This set has my absolute favorite scent in it (the orange chocolate one that smells JUST like an orange Tootsie Pop!).

Clinique's Almost Lipstick in Black Honey is one of those "if you haven't tried it, you need to" products. Do not fear the color in the tube - once you put it one, it gives a nice, sheer, berry-stained look and has the smooth feel of a chapstick. It's a best seller for a good reason.

Trying for the first time:

I've wanted to try this peel-off mask for a while - it's part science experiment (you mix up the mask from a powder), part spa-like fun. Plus, something about face masks is just SO luxurious. And they scare my boyfriend, which is always good.

Okay, I actually got the NAKED palette by Urban Decay (I think it's sold out now). I'm so excited - I've wanted it for a while, but couldn't stomach it full-priced. All of Urban Decay's palettes are amazing, though, and I've heard that their eyeshadow formula is one of the best.

I bought the set of benefit's three mini stains - the classic benetint, posietint, and their highlighter called high beam. It's a good deal ($15 for three bottles), and I'm excited to try these products.

Have you guys seen this MAGNETIC nail polish? It's amazing - you paint it on like regular polish, and then hold a magnet (there's one in the cap) over the wet polish and it makes these cool wave designs in it. It's stupid expensive ($16), but SO cool - I tried it at my local store last week and can't WAIT to get it. I just wish Sephora carried it in more colors (it just comes in this silver/black and a purple color)

- In case you live under a rock, Sephora Friends and Family sale is going on right now. I am a marketer's dream because these "SHORT TIME ONLY!" sales make me go in a speeding frenzy. We absolutely will not discuss how much moolah I dropped before 8am on Thursday morning. And we also won't talk about how I set up a second, fake email so I could fire off a second order with a new code Saturday evening. (PS, tomorrow's post will have some of my picks for the sale just in case you need inspiration. I'm an enabler).

- Walking Dead is back on TV. If you are not watching this show, you need to. Season 1 is on Netflix streaming right now, and I think the Season 2 premiere is on AMC's website. Since we are a football household, we (Jeremey and I) watch our Sunday night TV (Dexter, Walking Dead, Sister Wives, and Keeping Up With The Kardashians, obviously) Monday evening, so don't spoil this week's episode for me, please!

- I'm running my first ever 5k next Saturday and I am SCARED. I looked up the times from last year's race and the slowest person clocked the 5k at 49-ish minutes. So I just have to be faster than that. It's a costumed 5k, though, and I've never been more excited about a costume in my life. I'll be sure to have my mom take some pictures!

- Because I hate myself, I got another seasonal job this year. Thankfully I did NOT get another job at Forever 21 (I learned my lesson), but instead at Bath and Body Works. So far it's fun - the clientele is obviously a lot more mature than Forever 21's, and my coworkers are fun. Plus I get a 30% discount at B&BW AND Victoria's Secret. Ask me in three months how I feel about it, though.

- I'm a hipster now because I own TOMS. And they are as comfortable as every says. And yes, I wore them to work one day.

- The St. Louis Cardinals are in the World Series, in case you haven't heard. AND the Green Bay Packers are 7-0. Basically all is right in the sports world.

Sorry for the lack of posting around here, you guys - I know you haven't been able to sleep at night and I apologize. Truth is, I've been doing a lot of thinking about ye olde blog lately.

Recently, one of my favorite tumblrs, Stephanie, posted about blogging being ego masturbation (aaaaannnd my Google Analytics search results just got A LOT creepier) and it really struck a cord with me. She kinda put into words what I've been thinking lately, because while I would love to say "I blog for me and don't care if I get comments or followers or pageviews, lalala!", that is a lie. I love comments. Hey, you guys come here and comment how awesome I look. Who WOULDN'T want to hear that?

Now, I've never prided myself on being someone who is modest. Heck, one of my interests on Facebook is "myself". I've always been the girl that is just a little bit too concerned with herself and how she looks, and that's fine by me. I like attention, and to be honest, even if GOMI made a whole post about how much I suck I would probably find it entertaining. Even rude, anonymous comments make me laugh (because seriously, if you haven't made someone hate you, you haven't made it).

Of course, people telling me that I'm awesome isn't the ONLY reason I blog - I enjoy it, I like reading your blogs, it gives me 'someone' to bounce ideas off ('cause my boyfriend, while lovely, still doesn't understand what he calls "the boob belt", calls every striped shirt a Hamburgalar costume, and anything with ruffles is dubbed "pirate shirt"), and it makes me think more creatively (because no one would want to read my blog if I just wore a white shirt and black slacks every day). Blogging is completely different from what I do 8-5 every day, and it allows me to talk about silly things like shoes and belts, and it gives me some sort of weird permission to wear crazy orange tights.

But still...I don't know. I've developed a lot of hobbies recently (knitting, cooking, home decorating, running, working out), and have all but stopped doing hobbies that used to fuel my blog (spending...ahem...hours figuring out what I'd wear over the course of the week, shopping). I've been thinking of bridging some my new hobbies in here (maybe an occasional recipe post? A post on the chair I'm painting and re-upholstering, YHL-style?), but I haven't decided anything concrete yet. I've even registered another blog name (it's still hidden as there are no posts yet) in the event I decide to just completely start another, separate blog for just domestic stuff (two blogs! Eesh, I don't know if I can handle that).

Moral of the story is that, yes, my posting is less frequent around here, but I do not see it stopping completely any time in the near future. 'Cause I like you.

(and completely off topic, but I have to get a TB test today at work and I am NOT looking forward to it at all. (downside to my job: annual mandatory TB tests. Upside: baby elephants and lions!)

Well, buds, I did it. I survived my first boot camp class - barely. To give you an idea of my fitness level, prior to early June the most exercise I got was walking up the stairs or a lap around the mall. Then I started the 30 Day Shred and was on my work's kickball team (we had double-headers once a week, plus practices every once in a while). After the Shred, I started the Couch to 5k running program (which I'm still doing - I'm on week six (out of nine) now).

And then I started boot camp. It didn't start out too bad - chest/back/arm exercises with 5lb free weights, but then we did lunges...and in between sets of lunges, we ran Art Hill. For those of you not familiar with Art Hill in St. Louis, it's basically a big ass hill in front of the Art Museum that is arguably the most famous place in St. Louis to go sledding...because the hill is so big. And we ran it. Four times. And then I died. And now I'm dead.

So naturally after boot camp I went home and made chicken fried steak, cheesy mashed potatoes, and country gravy for dinner. Because I'm nothing if not a contradiction.

You guys, I'm about to embark on a scary adventure. A public fitness adventure.

Way back three months ago I bought a Groupon for a boot camp class in the park I work in. I've been procrastinating starting the 12 class series because I was worried I couldn't keep up. Now that I've completed the 30 Day Shred, and I only have three more weeks left for the Couch to 5k program, I feel like I can keep up...hopefully. I'm just really nervous - I've never really publicly worked out. I mean, I run outside, and in college I took classes at our rec center...but...I'm doing this by myself! In public! With strangers. I seriously hope I don't make a fool of myself.

What is one of your outfits that recently failed? what would you do to change it up?

Um, all of them? Haha, typically a "failed" outfit to me is one that I'm uncomfortable in (bunching up shirt, skirt that's too short, shoes that give blisters), so I just get rid of the offending item. Another thing that makes an outfit a fail is if it's boring. I like basics - if you flip through my archieves it's really easy to see that all I wear are plain tops with plain skirts, I just accessorize to make it interesting - or at least, interesting enough (now my secret is out). But sometimes I get really lazy and just wear a shirt and skirt without anything else, and that is boring. Seriously - how much would this outfit sucked without the belt and necklace? A LOT. But with the belt and necklace it only sucks a little. Because belts and necklaces make it FASHUN.

It's all one big love-fest in my closet. Sure, there are some items that are weekends-only (jeans, flip flops), and some that are work-only (pencil skirts), but for the most part I mix and match.

Big soda runs, followed by all-night decorating sessions. Even though having to inflate 500 helium balloons is pretty much as close to Hell as I've ever been, the caffine-fueled dance parties to Spice Girls were too much fun. I was at Target over the weekend in search of some person care items - for some reason I always manage to run out of deodorant, makeup remover wipes, disposal razors, and floss at the same time. It's annoying.

Anyway, can someone please tell me what sadist buys razors with non-pivoting heads? Or, for that matter, who on earth buys un-waxed floss? Seriously! I cringe just thinking about all the cuts I would get on my knees and how much my gums would hurt if I used those items. It is truly mind-boggling. My boyfriend says they even make men's razors without pivoting heads - WHO buys these torture devices? Might as well use a pair of safety scissors and a length of rope. For reals.

Also, will someone please tell me why on every cop show ever the "local" PD gets all upset when the Feds or another state or whatever gets to try the criminal instead? You know the whole "This is our jurisdiction now" speech - why do they get so upset? Shouldn't they just be like "awesome, less paperwork for me now"? Is there something about the justice system I just don't get?

(PS - people ask about these Old Navy wedges every time I wear them. They're 3 or 4 years old, I bought them on sale for around $20 because full-priced they were too rich for my college student (lack of) budget. They are just as comfortable as every other pair of wedges I own, and they've held up well over the years....um...and that's all I can think to say about these shoes)

You guys, I returned to the scene of the nastiness. Thankfully, said nastiness is all gone.

BUT now that it's nice out (or was nice out...now we're back in the 100s), there are runners EVERYWHERE, and runner totally busted me while I was taking these pictures...actually, this picture was taken as I was looking down at the ground going, "No...uh, I'm fine". Come on, people, I'm just taking pictures of myself in front of a bathroom, WHY DO YOU ACT LIKE THIS IS WEIRD?!?! (I realize that is actually weird, but whatevs).

Anyway, does anyone have anything fun planned for this weekend? I realize it's only Thursday, but Friday is Friday so it's basically the weekend now. Just don't tell my boss that's what I think.

Tonight I've got a kickball double-header (our last game of the season, so sad!), Friday I will probably grocery shop after work (what says domestication like grocery shopping on a Friday night?), Saturday I'm hanging with my mom and little brother - she's dragging him to go get his haircut. Ashley Getting Obsessed: Watches

When a sorority sister (hi, Cindy!) tweeted yesterday that she was in need of a watch, I offered to make up a blog post with some of my favorites so she could get an idea of what's out there. I LOVE watches...I just don't love dropping a bunch of cash, so my watch collection sits firmly at one watch. But whatever.

When buying a watch, I think it's it's good to expect to spend around $100. Sure, you can find watches for a lot cheaper, but in the end, a watch is something that gets a lot of abuse (hello, it's banging around on your wrist all day!), and should last a long time. I would much rather spend $100 on a watch that lasts years than $20 on a watch that the strap falls apart after a month or two.

When buying a watch, there are four main decisions you need to make: size, bling level, color, and material. I personally prefer a medium, bling-free, silver-toned, metal watch. Large, boyfriend style watches are very trendy, while a slender, bracelet-style watch is very feminine and will blend right in a stack of bracelets. Leather straps are always classic, and work well with this fall's menswear trends.

This Timex is one of my favorite watches right now - I think it will look great with menswear-style outfits, and it can toughen up girly frocks. Plus, the price is right - just $60 at Piperlime!

I'm not a fan of bling on watches (like...at all) BUT if you are okay with it, this tortoise style is very reminiscent of the much more spendy Micheal Kors Boyfriend Watch.

This colorful watch band keeps this Fossil watch from being an everyday piece, but it is so pretty!

This is my absolute favorite watch right now - I have been lusting over it since APRIL and finally purchased it last week - only to decide I just wouldn't wear it enough. The rose gold and square face make this watch modern, but it's sleek enough to still be in style years from now.

Stacks of bracelets are really popular right now, and this pretty leather-wrap watch would fit in great! Plus, this is less than $100!

This slender bracelet-style watch is perfect for the girl who wants something a little more under the radar - the simple face and slim band will make this a watch you can wear for years.

Then, of course, there's the infamous Michael Kors watch. The large size is super trendy, and everyone who sees you wearing this will know you dropped $250 on it. I personally can't stomach spending that much on a watch (heck, I only use mine to check the date!), but this is a great piece to put on wishlists for holidays and birthdays.

Something about this skirt makes it really difficult for me to wear it in warm weather - it's a "winter" skirt for me. I don't know what it is - the length? The color? The pleats? All of the above? If you didn't live in Missouri (or could live anywhere), then where and why?

Now, let me preface this by saying I LOVE Missouri - we have lush green forests, arid little glades, rivers, lakes, and fields. More than that, I LOVE St. Louis. But, life comes first and if I ever had to move, I could. I would just be really sad. Missouri for lyfe, yo'!

So, if I had to choose someplace else in the US, I would pick the Carolinas (North or South, I'm not picky) or Seattle. I mostly wouldn't want to live anywhere that is, on average, colder than Missouri in the winter, but if I had to move to a colder area, I'd pick Chicago or DC. Or Boston. I don't think I could ever live in a non-major city - I love having stuff to do and festivals to visit (that's why I think I'd love Chicago or Seattle - those cities love a street fair!).

ASAP. Haha, seriously, Seattle is near the top of my list of "US cities I want to visit" (Seattle, San Fransisco, Memphis, DC (again), Chicago (again), Tuscon, Albuquerque, Denver, Philadelphia, Orlando (can you believe I've NEVER been to Florida?), San Antonio....the list goes on.) Believe it or not I've been a lot of states (20 or so?), but I've hardly been to any major cities. My parents like the beaten trail more. Although, I wish the bat exhibit was still open at the Seattle Zoo (Woodland Park?) - there was a conference there a few years ago and it was all anyone talked about when they came back. Apparently it's closed, now, though.

Oooh, favorite trip? I really like Washington, DC. I'm a history/politics buff, and I won a trip there through an essay contest my junior year of high school with a group of other high schools. It was a week long, all expenses paid and was AMAZING. I have a friend moving there, though (today, actually!) so I've got a good shot at going to visit again.

The most exotic place? Well, back when I was younger (like, primary school), my parents used to take me out of school for a month in December every year and we'd drive down to Mexico. While there my parents would go map/explore caves. We were in some pretty backwoods places in Mexico. I wouldn't normally consider Mexico an "exotic" place, but it wasn't touristy at all. It was fun, though, and a good experience growing up.

You guys. Do you want here a HIGHLY irritating story? You do? Awesome, because I have one.

So, yesterday I was running some errands and made a stop at a QuickTrip near the Home Depot I was at for a lemonade and a scratcher lottery ticket. As I made my way outside, a man approached me and said "Man, it's hot out here....and geez, gas is expensive." I just smiled and agreed, even though it really wasn't all that hot out because I am a NICE PERSON.

The guy then goes, "and, Miss, can you spare some money? I'm out of gas and I've got my kids and I don't have any money". I gave my usual "sorry, I don't have any cash" response because I'm a NICE PERSON and I don't just tell people no or go get a job or whatever.

AND THEN the guy goes "well, I just saw you get some change in there, and I just really need some money. Please?". So I was busted. And embarrassed. And flustered. And I had just seen one of those commercials about how people need our help NOW because they are poor. And have I mentioned how I'm a NICE PERSON? So I open my wallet (Ugh, I cringe now thinking HOW DUMB THIS WAS. Life lesson 101: never open your wallet in front of a stranger or a person asking you for money) and give the guy a $10 bill. BECAUSE I'm a NICE PERSON.

And THEN the guy gets in his car (that DOES NOT have any kids in it!) and DRIVES AWAY. WITH my $10. And WITHOUT gas.

So to review, I was a NICE PERSON (and dumb) and gave this guy $10 and he just drove off. I was swindled! Seriously, how rude! And maybe he needed money for some medicine or food or something else, but whatever. SO ANNOYING.

All I can say is that karma will get him. Oh yes indeedy.

UGH. And it's almost 24 hours later and I am STILL annoyed over this. I just feel really dumb, mostly.

What do you guys do when people ask you for money? Ignore? Fib? Give it to them?

And oh my gosh, please never tell my mom about this if any of you happen to talk to her ever. She would skin me alive.

I have a problem.

See, I've been obsessed with the idea of loafer pumps forever...and then I saw that H&M had a pair. So I was going to buy them. Except only one H&M in St. Louis got the shoes, and they sold out in a day because they only got one size run (one of each size). So, dear, dear, bloggy friends. If you are going to your local H&M and happen to see these shoes in a size 7, would you possibly buy them for me and send them to me? I would die a happy death, in these shoes (with thick grey tights, and a dress, for those who want to know).

You guys, I'm totally jealous of the east cost and their whole earthquake. See, Missouri sits smack dab on the New Madrid Fault Line which is one of the major seismic zones in the US. And have I ever felt an earthquake? NOOOOOOOOOOO. I think there was on when I was in college, but I was in central Missouri and it was a little bitty earthquake, so we couldn't feel it. Oh, someone's trying to get me in trouble! Honestly, I can't really think of anything...we dated for almost four years before moving in together, so we've spent a lot of time together. I already knew all of his annoying habits ;).

If I HAD to pick something, it would be drinking milk right out of the carton - but we drink different milks (2% for me, skim for him) so it doesn't really bother me. And he clips his toenails in the living room...that's kinda nasty, especially when I sweep and find his clippings. Haha, you should ask him the same question - I think moving in with me was more of a shock that me moving in with him (I never close my closet door, I leave shoes everywhere, I don't put dishes in the dishwasher, I get hair EVERYWHERE...the list could go on!).

This outfit isn't one that I'm particularly proud of - but it was the day after my running incident, and I was SORE, plus covered with band aids and medical tape everywhere. Hey guys - no outfit post for today, but I really liked the FBFF questions for this week so I figured I'd answer them...and to keep it interesting I'm inserting random pictures from my iPhone. Ha!

seeing the Arch is one of those things that never gets old to me - I snapped this while driving back from my friend Chrissy's house in IL

1. Fess up – if you could do anything professionally what would it be?

Anything? I'd be a stay at home mom. When I was in 1st grade we had to fill out a goals sheet and on mine was "learn how to make cookies so I can be a good mommy". And that hasn't changed.

Or, alternatively, a summer camp counselor. Basically something with kids. If I had to pick something where I could legitimately make a living, I'd say a volunteer manager at a large non-profit that benefits animals, the outdoors, or children.

My friend Emily and I just went and saw the Glee movie...it was....interesting, to say the least. But we got these sweet hats (and a bag!)...and now you know why I never wear hats.

2. What draws you to this?

I LOVE children, I love caring for people, and I love going to work knowing that what I am doing is benefiting the greater good, not just lining some CEO's pocket.

When it's cold out, they take the penguins for walks at work. This is from a snowy day two winters ago - they're so cute waddling down the sidewalks and sliding down snow banks. (Have I mentioned how much I love my job?)

3. When did you first start dreaming about this ideal?

Well, as soon as I realized a volunteer manager was a thing, I wanted to be one. Soo....high school, maybe?

4. What’s holding you back from going all in?

The dollar bills, yo! And job security. I'm at a very secure position right now, at a non-profit organization that I LOVE (that is making more money than ever in the bad economy), and I have wonderful coworkers. It would be VERY difficult for me to find another place of work that I love as much, and I know that. I almost wish that I had started my career elsewhere so I could end up retiring here....or I could just work here until retirement (which, since I started so young would be around 54).....

My new favorite drink (the diet tastes SO much better than the regular). It's wonderful by itself, and even better with some vodka and a lime wedge.

5. Sometimes the first step is the hardest… what’s one step you can take now on the way to realizing your dream?

I'm someone who doesn't look for options when I'm happy - why mess with what's working? And legitimately, there is the potential for me to get in my dream position at my current employer in 5 years or so....really I just need to focus on getting more education, and actually find a place to volunteer myself so I can get more experience that way.

I can't look at this picture without laughing - it's my friend Sam in a Burberry trench he scored for a really good deal on eBay - only to get the coat and realize the sleeves are elbow length on him.

Brain Dump!

- I'm still obsessed with Pinterest! I totally copied this outfit from a pin (but the pin isn't linking to the original source so I can't cite you, unfortunately), and all of this weeks dinners are pins (check out my boards here).

- Am I the only blogger in the world who thinks that the Missoni for Target stuff is ~~kinda~~ ugly? I mean, I'm not a big fan of real Missoni stuff, so it makes sense I don't like it...but...it's ugly zig zagged stripes in ugly color combos! Come on!

- I've decided the be a runner (whatever that means) now that I'm kinda bored with the what has turned into 45 Day Shred. I've been running the past few days without rhyme or reason, so I decided I would download the Coach to 5k app. Well, yesterday, 8 minutes into the 30 minute program, I tripped (our neighborhood is really old, so the sidewalks are really uneven), SLID down the sidewalk, and landed with a piece of glass wedged in the palm of my hand and a nasty road burn all down my right leg. So, that's awesome.

- We had a fire drill at work today. Great. Except something malfunctioned with our REALLY LOUD, REALLY HIGH PITCHED alarm, and it's been going off for the past 30 minutes. I think I'm deaf.

- Do you guys ever find a blog that you would normally have ZERO interest in, but for some reason can't stop reading? That's how I feel about this blog. Emily is everything I'm not - vegetarian (almost vegan!), cool, pregnant, super fit, a writer - but I'm obsessed...I think I've read back into her achieves 50 pages!

- The weather in Missouri has been AH-MAY-ZING lately - like highs in the mid 80s and breezy. So awesome after our crazy hot June and July.

- I had to run through my neighbor's sprinklers to get to our alley to take these pictures, resulting in water drops all over my oatmeal colored cardi...so I used the zit remover thing in iPhoto to take (most of) them out!

- My newest TV obsessions: Dance Moms (seriously, if you love guilty pleasure cat fight TV, go watch it NOW!) and Ice Loves Coco. Jeremey and I watched every episode together, it's so funny! Unfortunately the season is over now. I can't wait for fall TV, though - The Walking Dead and Dexter, mostly!

- I've been a reading fiend lately (thanks to my new library card!) - I think I've read 10 books in as many days. My favorite out of all of them though, was Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. It's a true story about how Ron, a millionaire art dealer, and Denver, a homeless man, met and became friends. It made me laugh and cry so hard - it's such an amazing story, and is SO inspiring (I liken it to The Pursuit of Happyness if you've ever read that (which if you haven't, you should - SO much better than the movie!)). I can't recommend it enough!

Uh, sorry this picture is so bad (taking a picture at noon + back lighting = not the best picture). It's from the annual HR conference I go to down at the SENIC, notatallinfestedwithwaytoomuchbacteria, Lake of the Ozarks in southern Missouri. Readers who have been around for a while may remember last year when I was freaking out over what to wear - the conference has a "lake casual" dress code. This year, much like last year, I stuck with simple jersey dresses (and this tank/denim combo) that I jazzed up with fun necklaces (I even wore this tank last year!). This is the only picture from the conference, though, because it RAINED every other day. Boo.

Anyway, on to more questions - today's questions are random fashion-y Qs:

Jo and Heidi both asked: what is the most expensive item in your closet and why did you buy it? And then conversely: what is the least expensive item in your closet, and what is it's story?

The most expensive item in my closest that I've purchased would be these boots that I wear all the time. They were just a smidge over $100, so I'm absolutely not a big spender in any way (and I think the cost per wear is pennies now!). I have some purses that retailed for over $100, but I didn't buy any of them, and I guess my suit was way more than $100, but my mom bought that for me in college for interviews (thanks, mom!).

The least expensive item? Ohhh geez...socks? Haha...Or I have a whole bunch of free t-shirts from blood drives/college/etc in my closet. As far as something I would actually wear, it might actually be the tank in this post (yup, right up there!). I think I only paid $2 or so for it.

I'm a browser, for sure. I'll go to the mall and walk around for a good hour or so checking stuff out and not buy a thing (especially recently - it's been weeks since I've bought anything!). I usually try stuff on, but if I'm not in the mood, wearing something too complicated (anything with a belt, mostly), or the line is too long, I'll just purchase an item and return it if it doesn't work out.

It depends - I usually have a running list of things I'm looking for (right now an embellished grey tank and an olive green top (with sleeves) come to mind), so I'm always on the lookout for those items - but if I'm in a store and see something that I just really like that isn't too expensive (like...less than $30 for a dress/skirt, less than $20 for a top), then I'll buy it. Anything over $30 I usually sleep on it to see if I still want it the next day (I usually don't!).

So, our first topic is work:

Lisa asked: I know you mentioned you are in HR - how did you get into your field? Was that something you studied for in school or did you "fall" into it? I'm always interested in how people got to doing what they are now doing.

I completely "fell" into HR. I graduated with a BA in Sociology and Political Science, which, while interesting, doesn't really narrow down any career paths. Around March of my senior year I started looking for something (anything!) to do after graduation, and began looking for internships at the local botanical garden, where a sorority sister had an internship the previous summer. That led me to checking out other attractions in St. Louis, and I ended up finding an HR internship at my current employer. I figured I could do it (it sounded easy!) so I applied, interviewed, and was accepted. A full time position opened up right near the end of my internship, and I applied, interviewed, and was given a job offer. I really love what I do, so I consider myself incredibly lucky!

Tricia asked: What was the worst job you have ever had? How long did you work there?

Hmm...I haven't had any truly AWFUL jobs, but my first job was at KFC...so that was kinda disgusting, especially for a girl that doesn't even like KFC! I worked there for almost two years, though (until I went to college) so it wasn't all bad (we made over a dollar over minimum wage and all my friends worked there, so it was fun). I also worked as a full time waitress after I graduated college (while interning) and my boss was a complete misogynist, so that sucked.

Kelly asked: What did you study in college? Also, can you pleaaaaase tell us more of the ridiculous things people have said while interviewing for jobs at your work?

As I mentioned above, I have a BA in sociology and political science, and an English minor. I loved college, and I love learning - I want to go back to school really bad for an MBA, but it's so much money!

Man oh man, you guys have some good questions listed on my giveaway post! Some real thinkers, for sure! I've also never seen an episode of the Brady Bunch, Leave it to Beaver, or the Real World, and I only just saw an episode of Rugrats my senior year of college.

Blame it on a sheltered childhood, blame on a lack of cable growing up (I'm picking that one)...but sometimes I certainly feel left out of conversations.

Happy Monday, everybody! I'm so excited because it's a short-ish week for me - I'm taking Wednesday off work to hit up Six Flags with my boyfriend! Haha, I haven't been since high school, so I'm looking forward to riding some coasters and eating a giant turkey leg!

Last week was a whirlwind - I had my annual conference for work down at the lake Wednesday-Friday, and spent Friday night at my friend Chrissy's parent's house for her hometown's homecoming fair. Saturday my boyfriend and I made dinner and then headed to Bailey's Chocolate Bar for some insane dessert. So much fun!

The coolest thing, though, was while down at the lake and out to dinner with my bosses and a coworker, we saw former NBA player Shawn Bradley. He didn't play for too long, but was famous for being freaking huge - he's SEVEN FEET SIX INCHES tall! Seriously a giant - standing next to him the top of my head was at his waist. If you don't follow basketball (uh, me neither), you might now him as that really tall white basketball player in the movie Space Jam:

Only he doesn't look as dorky anymore - just really, really tall. He was really nice, too - apparently he is partner in a string of houses for troubled kids (he's got one in Salt Lake City (where he lives), one at the lake here in Missouri, and a few other places)

I would say I'm a pretty straight laced, classic person. Sure, I enjoy a chunky statement necklace every now and again, but I'm usually not a fan of more bohemian, "crunchy" styles.

That is, until I started seeing these earthy, chunky natural crystals and rocks dangling from chains. Maybes it's my years spent underground with my parents, exploring caves and caverns, or maybe it's that fascination I've always had with sparkly rocks....but something about these shiny, unscripted necklaces really strikes a chord with me.

Here are some of my favorites currently available:

these natural amethyst pendants are so chunky and lovely

This little crystal piece reminds me of something you'd see in a Spencer's Gifts, circa 1998...only with a dragon or fairly wrapped around it.

Ugh, you guys. As I told Kathleen yesterday, you know it's hot out when your local weatherman starts comparing our temperature to what it's like in Phoenix and San Antonio. For the record, we're only about 6 degrees cooler than them, but with humidity factored in we actually have heat indicies HIGHER than both of the cities. In the immortal words of Gwen Stefani, this sh*t is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S. But hey, we're breaking heat records over here, so that's something.

In other news, there's some giant mutant fly buzzing around my office, so basically my life is ruined.

Random thoughts:

- Ombre glitter nails are my new favorite thing (and so easy to DIY!):

(I did mine fairly subtly since I work in an office and I guess I'm supposed to be an adult (?).)

- I'm on day 8 of The Shred and while I might not LOOK different, I definitely feel different. 8 days ago I couldn't do more than two push ups - now I can 15 or so!

- two of my really good friends from college got engaged last week, and they had an engagement party last night. It was so fun, and I'm so happy for them! BUT I also feel bad for the bride because they're moving to Fort Worth, Texas in a few weeks for work so she basically has to plan the whole wedding now. Eek!

- on the way back from the party J and I stopped at a Dunkin' Donuts! Now, this might not seem that exciting, but there are TWO DD in St. Louis, and one's in the airport, so it was really exciting for me. I haven't had DD in.....forever?

- We also stopped at a Walgreens (we have those everywhere, don't worry), where my car decided to die. at 8:30pm. On a Sunday. In a not-so-nice part of town. Awesome. After a less-than-helpful call to my mom (she suggested calling our insurance agent. Ha!), we decided there wasn't anything we could do at the time and called one of my coworkers who lived nearby for a ride. We then gave a ring to Jeremey's dad who is a mechanic, and went back this morning to try some new options. Thankfully my car died on a block that also had two auto mechanics and an O'Rielly Auto Parts store, so $70, a little bit of sweat, and a little bit of dit later, I have a new battery and my car (knock on wood) is working better than before (seriously - some of my gauges and my radio wasn't working properly - now it's all fine!)!

- This weather can go suck it (upper 90s-100s all this week!)

- I feel like the only person in the world who hasn't seen Harry Potter yet! It's on my list, I just haven't had time! (or anyone to go with...so I've gotta get brave enough to go to a movie by myself!)

- Some sorority sisters and I went out on Saturday and at one bar this group of 40-ish year old guys were hitting on us (in a nice way...it wasn't too creepy). Anyway, they ALL looked like celebrities. It was crazy - there was a George Clooney doppleganger, a Ben Affleck doppleganger (he was a bit of a stretch), and a Steven Baldwin/John Travolta doppleganger. It was the strangest thing!

- It drives me crazy when other bloggers mention something like "reader Lucy said I should...." if Lucy has a blog. If Lucy has a blog, then say "blogger Lucy said I should....", and LINK! The blogging/social media community is all about connections, so if someone is worth mentioning on your blog, give them the courtesy of a link (which takes about two seconds to do!). (Now, I might not be perfect in this and might miss someone every once in a while, but there are some bloggers who do this on the regular and it drives me crazy. And no, it didn't happen to me. But I care about my fellow bloggers as much as I care about myself!)

- I got a letter from my federal student loan provider telling me my interest rate went down (!) (yay!). I called to ask what my new payments are....it's $.24 less. Not 24 dollars. 24 cents. So, basically beers are on me.

Whoooo buddy, it is H-O-T HOT outside. Today the actual temperature is 100*, but combine that with the humidity and it is disgusting outside! I am grateful for air conditioning, I'll tell you what!

I had a pretty good weekend, how about you guys? Saturday I made a yummy breakfast then got my hair cut and highlighted for the first time since March (eek! I think my stylist was ready to smack me) - you should be seeing the results of that later this week - then my boyfriend and I went to see Horrible Bosses (seriously SO funny - go see it!) and went to BARcelona, one of my favorite tapas places in St. Louis. We ended the night watching Batman Begins and Jurassic Park (well, Jeremey fell asleep halfway through Batman Begins, but I watched it!)

Sunday my kickball team had our first practice - have I mentioned that? Some of my coworkers and I are in a kickball league here in the city for the summer - our first game is Thursday night! Anyway, it was in direct sunlight at the heat of the day (they were saying the "feels like" temperature was 107* and I believe it!). I thought I was going to DIE. Thankfully our games are all at night, because if I had to play a full kickball game like that I would be vomiting and that is NOT cute.

Anyway, I somehow managed to twist my ankle on my first kick at our first practice. Thankfully due to years of figure skating and cheerleading I'm more than used to a little twisted ankle, so I kept playing on it....then I got home and did the 30 Day Shred with Jeremey (we are going to be SKINNY in 30 days, just you wait!), and now my ankle is a giant swollen mess. I've been icing it and everything, and I had our medics look at it at work today - it's just a twist or slight sprain, so there's really nothing to do - I've just gotta man up, I suppose.

So yeah, that's the story of Ashley and her athletic adventures.

Have any of you ever completed the 30 Day Shred? I started it in college (by "started it" I mean I did one day), but I feel like I'm actually going to complete it this time - twisted ankle and all!

Hey guys! How was everybody's holiday weekend? Between Canada Day and Independence Day it was a party up in North America, amiright? Mexico really needs to get with the program, fo' sho!

We had some roofers show up early Friday morning (like 5am early) to put a new roof on my house (thanks, landlord man, for letting us know....NOT!) - which meant I had to get out of there by 6:30am so they could use a crane to lift shingles up. The loverly roofers then proceeded to start working at 5am every.single.day since. They finally finished up this afternoon, so hopefully I'll be able to sleep past 5am tomorrow and I am looking forward to THAT! There's nothing worse than a nice long weekend where you are woken up super early every morning, I decided.

Besides all of THAT, I went to a Greek restaurant with some friends Friday night, and spent Saturday scurrying around cleaning up the house before my boyfriend got back from vacation (he was visiting family in Wisconsin for a week), then grabbed lunch with a good friend from college at a deli near my house. After that, I went home for an evening barbecue with my family and some fireworks (one of the benefits of living in the country is that we can shoot off fireworks without fear of getting in trouble!).

Sunday a group of my friends and I had big plans to go downtown for a free Maroon 5 concert and fireworks - one girl even drove in from Chicago for it! It started raining in the afternoon, but we just figured we'd go down and wait it out in a bar then head to the fairgrounds. So we hoped on the MetroLink, and just as we were getting off they announced the concert, fair, and fireworks were all cancelled due to the rain. Boo! We spent some time at some bars, but headed home pretty early.

Monday was just a lot of hanging out at home and watching way too much Seinfeld (I'm watching the entire series on DVD, so now I'm that obnoxious person who says "just like that episode of Seinfeld!" at everything.).

Let's get to the good stuff - my encounter with WORLD FAMOUS CELEBRITIES (biggest exaggeration ever).

So, we had hosted a red-carpet premiere for the Kevin James movie Zookeeper yesterday at my work. It was a big hubub that required a lot of preparation, but it was really fun and it was an excellent way to spend a day.

But on to the famous people!

Obviously, Kevin James was there (here he is exciting the bathroom in the building my office is in):

Fun facts about Kevin James:

- He's REALLY nice - he went out of his way to take pictures and sign autographs, even though the Sony people in charge of the whole production kept telling him to hurry up

- He's currently a vegan - he dined on brown rice, a veggie burger patty, and veggie soup for lunch

- that guy to the left of him in the brown shirt? His #1 body guard (and he looks JUST like him!)

And there were some local athletic celebrities:

That's St. Louis Blues players TJ Oshie, some mediocre blonde guy, a skanky girlfriend, and hottie Ben Bishop on the end cut off.

Jack "The Ripper" Clark, a former Cardinals baseball player, and Adam Wainwright, a current pitcher for the Cardinals were there, too.

But the highlight for me was meeting this guy:

No, not the cool looking black guy in the corner (everyone thought that was Nelly, though, no joke).

Yup, that's right. I met Jeff "The Mask" Medolla of Bachelorette.

Even though his hand placement was a little questionable, he was a really nice guy - his eyes continue to creep me out (seriously, it's like he's staring into my soul!), but he seemed really down to earth and cool, not at all like the weirdo they edited him to be on TV. He told me later that he did the whole mask thing as a joke, which makes sense because you'd have to be seriously disturbed to think that's an alright way to meet a lady (but does anyone remember that dating show where the people actually DID wear masks?).

Anyway, that was my brush with fame yesterday. I didn't actually watch the movie, so I can't provide a review (I, believe it or not, had work to do at work), but our intern saw it and said it was exactly what she expected - a kid's movie with talking animals.

Neon, two ways!

I've been really obsessed with the neon trend lately (just ask some of my friends - I've always been attracted to highlighter colors), and this little tee has been hanging out in my closet for years (I think since high school!). When I saw the neon and neutral Bloggers Do It Better challenge I was interested, but, in typical Ashley fashion, completely forgot about it until later.

Thus, my neon and khaki creation was born for a day at work. Later that evening my boyfriend and I headed down the street to Ted Drewes for some frozen custard so I swapped my skirt for comfy shorts and my heels for some BRIGHT flip flops I picked up a few weeks ago at Old Navy. I've had my eye on a similar pair of flippies at J.Crew for a while, but I couldn't stomach that price for FLIP FLOPS. Luckily, the Old Navy pair were less than $10, which was right up my alley.

Ladies, we need to talk about a VERY important issue.

There are two classes of women in the world....the Hoverers and the Sitters.

You know - the women who hover over the public toilets and the women who just sit.

I'm a RH- a Reformed Hoverer. I used to hover like nobody's business. But then I started working at a place where my only options are a public restroom (unless I want to walk really far to get to the staff restroom). So I just sit. 'Cause gosh darn it, I was tired. My thighs need a break some time.

Soon, my sitting branched out - a Target here, an Applebee's there.

Then, Wednesday, I forgot one of the cardinal rules of being a Sitter:

Thou Shalt Not Sit On A Public Toilet In A Bar Without First Looking Where Thou Sits.

And I sat on a pee-covered seat.

Gah-ross.

This resulted in me taking a shower ASAP (I'm not a germaphobe, but I AM anotherperson'surineaphobe), which really just messed up my mojo.

And this brings me to the first cardinal rule of being a Hoverer:

If Thy Urine Splashes On Thy Toilet Seat (which girl, let's be real, that's totally happening), Thou Shalt Clean Up Thy Seat With Much Haste.

As long as we follow these simple rules, the world will be at peace.

This dress was a long lost item that was left in my closet at home during the move. And by "long lost" I mean it must have gotten stuck in my brother's hamper the last time I wore it (about a week prior). Still, when I was reunited with it I was really excited and wore it again ASAP.

It's a little funny to me how much I like this dress - I've never been a fan of black clothing, especially on me (pale skin, fair coloring - not a good combo). This dress has proved to be a helpful foundation piece, and it allows me to layer all sorts of different colors and shapes with it, changing it's functionality completely. To date, I've worn it to work four times, casually three times, and to a fancy resturant once. For a dress that's had a rather short residency in my closet, that's pretty impressive.

Check out my apartment! What a beautiful beige wall and brown floor, right? Haha, this is our dining room that has absolutely nothing in it, and will probably remain that way - my boyfriend likes to be able to toss a football around in it. Boys, amiright?

Anyway, what have you lovelys been up to? I've been working and making our house homey, and that's about it.

ALTHOUGH yesterday, in a drastic act of defensive driving, I did have a little run-in with a trashcan, resulting in a brand new dent on my fender and a missing review mirror - so irritating!

Oh, and I figured out how to combat the always-too-low neckline of a wrap dress problem - add one of those cheap, stretchy bandeau bras that are available everywhere, and you're covered up without the bulk of a tank top! #Winning! (remember when Charlie Sheen was a thing?)

Whoo! I've been rather MIA lately, haven't I? Well, to make up for it, I've got Ashley Getting Dressed: fancy edition here for you! This is what I wore to my work's biennial creative black tie fundraiser Friday. Jeremey and I were joined by another couple that we're friends with and we ate and drank the night away - there were over 60 St. Louis restaurants participating with "tastes" of dishes, from the average (prime rib, lobster salad, seared ahi tuna, sun dried tomato roasted pork loin) to the outrageous (duck l'orange wrapped in orange cotton candy, a bacon bar featuring bacon cooked four ways, plus bacon chocolates) - not to mention the drinks - 8 different bars with different "specialty" drinks, plus regular stocked bars. Round that off with live music and beautiful weather and it was a great evening.

There were definitely some of St. Louis' wealthiest there, though - one of the silent auction items went for almost half of my annual salary - most of the silent auction items fetched winning bits in the $1,500-$3,000 range. Add that on to the ticket price ($225/person for general admission or $1000/couple for reserved seats), and people were dropping some dough (fear not - we got to purchase tickets at a special employee price that was MUCH more reasonable!) Crazy! It was all for a good cause, though!

All in all it was nice to dress up and get fancy. Now I'm counting down the days until the next one (June 21, 2013!) Have you ever gone to any fancy fundraisers like that?

Considering I've lived on three or more acres my entire life (most of my life I lived on six!), my city apartment's tiny 1/4 acre lot is downright dreary. But hey, with strawberry plant volunteers (seriously! Free strawberries!), peonies, and the neighborhood bunny that I've named Frank, it all works out. Random things going on in my head right now:

- these are probably my favorite earrings, and they cost all of $6. Totally worth it.

- My apartment has brand new appliances, and the oven smokes a little bit when we use it (which is totally normally, according the the manual). Tuesday night my boyfriend and some friends went to a bar and came back around 1am and cooked a frozen pizza. This made the smoke alarm was go off and I never woke up. That is terrifying.

- It's way too hot way too early in St. Louis. Monday I had to walk about two blocks to go work at a job fair and I was DRENCHED in sweat - sweaty giraffes? Cute. Sweaty girl in a giraffe print dress? Not so cute.

- My work's biannual creative black tie fundraiser is next week. I already have a dress (it's a peacock green, cocktail length silk chiffon number), but I need shoes! Since the event is outside at work, I can't do normal high heels - we have old sidewalks and cobblestones, and that combined with an open bar is a recipe for disaster. I'm thinking I'd like a slim wedge in silver, but I can't find any I like that are fancy enough. Also, I need a hair piece! I was planning on buying a peacock feather fascinator on etsy, but the one I like is $50, which is out of my budget for something I'll wear once. I'm thinking I might try to DIY something with a glue gun...we'll have to see how that goes.

- I finally tried a Starbucks Coconut Mocha Frappuccino this morning. I don't get the hype - I much prefer my iced skinny vanilla latte.

- Jeremey and I saw the new X-Men movie last night - I LOVED it!

- I'm working on putting together a goody basket for my Blogiversary giveaway. It will be OFF the HOOK.

- If all goes as planned, later today I'll be announcing the winner of the Karen Kane giveaway.

- I swear, I have to change my passwords to stuff every time I log in. At work, we can't have any passwords the same, and they have crazy qualifies (no consecutive same characters, must have a number, must reference a Backstreet Boy, etc). As a result, I forget all my passwords all the time and just have to reset them every day. Obnoxious.
