So. A little tornado hit St. Louis on Friday night. I was at a wedding at a winery outside of the city, and the outdoor ceremony went off without a hitch. By the time we made it inside for the reception, there was horizontal rain and hail with tornado sirens blaring. The DJ assured us they would let us know if we needed to head down to the wine cellar, but we ended up never going down, even though a tornado touched down in New Melle, which is about 15 minutes north of where we were.
The tornado traveled east, touching down in north St. Louis and tearing about the airport - my brother is a waiter at the Chili's in the airport and the roof was torn off the terminal right where his restaurant is. He sent me this picture from work yesterday:
His managers are saying it will probably be six months before they open - he's hoping that they'll open up a concourse that isn't be used right now so he'll have a job in the meantime.
The tornado continued on through Illinois, destroying churches and homes and stores on the way. It actually touched down about a mile from my boyfriend's apartment! He's out of town for work, so he was home, thank goodness, and I drove by there this morning on my way to work - there is damage literally across the street from his apartment, but thankfully his apartment and car are okay
Overall there was a TON of damage, but remarkably there have been no fatalities or serious injuries reported, which is a little bit of a miracle.
